RSD Horse Auctions, LLC holds horse and tack auctions the first Friday of every month along with an annual January 1 sale. Sales are held at Eyler Stables in Thurmont, MD, just 15 minutes from the Pennsylvania state line off Route 15. Loads of new and used tack begin selling at 6 pm, and horses of all breeds, registered and grade, begin selling at 8:30 pm. Horses sold sound sell with a three day soundness guarantee.
A small restaurant offers soup, hot dogs, coffee and the facility’s signature red velvet cake.
Tim Smith and Jim Roberts, owners of RSD, have since 2008 continued the generations-long tradition of the Friday night horse auction. The land and buildings are still owned by Niki Eyler who was born and raised on the property owned by her family since1933. The stalls are bedded and have both hay and water available. There is a small outdoor arena where horses are worked for prospective buyers.
“We have a variety of all types of good riding horses and ponies for all disciplines of riding. Something for everyone: English, western and gaited, priced to fit all types of budgets,” said Smith.
“Both of us remember coming to Thurmont for the Eyler Stables sale with our grandads when we were just little kids,” Smith continued. “It was something that you just went to every weekend back then. It was not only the horses and the tack, it was the social end of it, too. This is where you saw your friends. We’d hate to let that get away from us.”
